Protect Galveston Now is a citizen-led movement supporting construction of the Galveston Ring Barrier. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has developed a plan to protect our island from catastrophic storm surge. Our mission is to educate the public, answer questions, and encourage local, state, and federal leaders to make this project a reality.
Our Mission
Protect Galveston Now is a nonpartisan, citizen-led advocacy organization. We exist for one reason: to ensure the Galveston Ring Barrier — also known as the Ike Dike — is fully funded and built before the next major hurricane strikes the Texas Gulf Coast.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed their feasibility study. Congress authorized the project. Federal funding has been allocated. What's missing is sustained public pressure to keep the project on track, on budget, and on schedule.
That's where we come in.

Raise and extend the existing Galveston Seawall to 17 feet, adding a new coastal barrier along Bolivar Peninsula — the first line of defense against open-ocean storm surge.
Construct massive navigable surge gates at the three openings connecting Galveston Bay to the Gulf — Bolivar Roads, San Luis Pass, and the Houston Ship Channel — to stop surge from entering the bay.
Build interior ring levees around the most vulnerable communities on the bay side of Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula, providing a final layer of protection.
